Thinking Through Refuse to Choose: 101 things every Scanner should know

Thinking Through Refuse to Choose coverAre you a Scanner? These are people with a different (and often misunderstood) type of mindset: they’re curious and smart, always happiest when learning something new. But no matter how promising a path may appear, Scanners can never give up their love of exploring. And therein lies the problem: despite their passionate engagement with the world and their love of life, Scanners are unable to decide on one path, and they’re often afraid that there’s something horribly wrong with them. It’s usually forgotten that such people were once admired for their wide range of knowledge, even called Renaissance thinkers. Now they’re often labeled as immature, lazy dilettantes by a culture that prizes specialization above all else. I wrote this 99-cent Kindle book (with two great helpers) to highlight the top 101 takeaways from my book, Refuse to Choose! Use All of Your Interests, Passions, and Hobbies to Create the Life and Career of Your Dreams. Use it as an introduction or as a reminder after you read the book. Purchase this Kindle book here.

WriteSpeak Online: Write Your Own Success Story

WriteSpeak Online registration is closed now until September 13, 2025. This is Barbara’s entire WriteSpeak program—the 6-hour, highly interactive Teleworkshop plus a new 48-week online version of the material that was in her WriteSpeak retreat and telecourse, all for a fraction of the earlier price. The course is now taught by Kimberly Stewart, a WriteSpeak grad, and Patrice Jenkins, a member of the first WriteSpeak group in 2007 and the first WriteSpeaker to be published, who first taught the Teleworkshop in 2020 with Barbara. Monthly group coaching is included and one-on-one coaching is available. Those who have already completed the required Teleworkshop and want to add the 48-Week Course should write to webmaster@barbarasclub.com.

For more information, check out barbarasclub.com/writespeak or listen to this Telesummit recording: How to Become a Writer and Speaker by Next February. New member registration will open again on September 13, 2025. Come find your message and your audience and begin your writing and speaking career.

We always need more Sher Success Teams leaders, so if helping others go after their dreams is your dream, there’s a business in a kit waiting for you, a Leader’s Kit with everything you need to run that same workshop.

  1. Hi Barbara,

thanks for an awesome homepage, many great tools to apply in life. I wonder if you will hold any course in Sweden or Scandinavia within the recent future?

    Best regards,
    Crissy : )

    • Thank you! I’d love to come to Sweden and Scandinavia, Cissy. I’ve never been there and I’ve always wanted to go. Not quite sure where to start. I guess I need to find a list of organizations that bring in speakers.

    • Don’t be shy about helping me find that list of places that invite speakers and authors to run workshops, Crissy. I’d do it myself, but it’s all in Swedish. 🙂

  2. Barbara, I’ve been reading (and rereading) your books for many years now, and find them tremendously encouraging. Thank you so much. I admire your generosity, ingenuity, and your talent for helping people keep their passion alive. Through your books, you have kept so many people clar about their dreams.

Ever since I discovered your books, I’ve wanted to offer groups based on SuccessTeams. I did run a group years ago, and people seemed to get a lot out of it. But then I had some big setbacks in my own life.

I’m going forward again now, and still am interested in offering groups where I live (a large town/tiny city in Canada). Maybe I haven’t found the right approach for this locale, because I’ve gotten very little response to my invitations, and no follow-through. I seem to have a huge obstacle in the marketing-myself department–can think of lots of reasons why not to offer this.
I’m very happy to discover your website.

    • There’s a special way to do it, Diane. Sometimes it involves tying up with another group, like a church that has extra-curricular programs and a newsletter, for instance. And learning how to run Idea Parties.

You should check out how to do that and how to get a steady group of eager Idea People showing up each month. You should also check out http://www.shersuccessteams.com to learn more about how to run teams, and if there are any opportunities to do that in your town.

  3. I am interested in connecting with people to share my creativity and experiences and get guidance on what path or paths I would like to take given my particular skill set & scanner passions. I want to inspire and be inspired. I am just bursting at the seams and want to move to the next level and need coaching & encouragement.

    • You should join Hanging Out, Chelsea:
If you want to read more about it, go to
BarbarasClub.com and click on Hanging Out in the menu

Or, if you want to really get moving, and be understood and helped to unleash that beautiful energy, you should be in a Success Team. See if there’s one in your area by looking at http://www.shersuccessteams.com

If there isn’t, you should consider being a Success Team leader yourself. It’s inexpensive and easy, and you might find yourself inspiring people – and being inspired by them – right off the bat.

  4. Hey everyone. I have just been reading up about the “Success Groups” and want to get things started in Bundaberg, Australia. Wondering if there are some existing groups that I can contact for advice for startups. If it is OK, I will leave my contact – once the web editor grants permission.

    • Hi Marty
Sorry I didn’t see this in time. I’m having a Scanner retreat in France in 2 weeks, but it’s been full for some time. You should go to http://www.geniuspress.com and get on my mailing list so you’ll be notified if I do another.

I haven’t done one for a few years because I was having health problems, but things took a wonderful turn and I’m starting again. I love retreats better than anything I do — and that’s saying a lot because I love running the whole Hanging Out program more than I ever imagined. But that’s another story.

Get on my mailing list so you’ll know what’s happening. You’re right to want to find your people. Once you know you’re a Scanner, you find good people to play with. It’s always warming and fun.

  5. Can I switch easily from one payment to the other? I could wait until later in the month to make the year payment, but that would require *waiting* and foosticks, who wants to do that? *waves arms in childlike enthusiasm*

If I can easily switch from monthly to yearly that will be how I go. 🙂

    • Unfortunately, no. And you’ll save a lot of money by waiting to sign up for the full year. But keep that wonderful enthusiasm, because it’s going to be a great ride, and we can’t wait to have you join the community!

  6. Around 1990, I went to one of Barbara’s Wishcraft workshops in Toronto, where I was working at the time. I had loved Barbara’s original Wishcraft book so took my teenaged daughter as I thought hearing Barbara would be a nice gift at her age.

I remember Barbara telling people to walk around the room and ask strangers what their dream (goal) was. But I was surprised by the answers: everyone either wanted a business or property. I asked my daughter how it went. “It was kind of weird,” she said. “They just want real estate or a business…”

As I recall, Barbara then asked the audience for examples of their dreams. And as one person after another said they wanted a business or real estate, I thought she looked a bit confused, like, “Isn’t anyone going to come up with something different?”

I was too shy at that point to publicly raise my own dream (finishing my books – since I am a journalist with a book-completion hangup) or to explain about the real estate / business thing that Toronto is a business-oriented city. Having come from Vancouver, I knew that if Barbara was doing this on the west coast someone would want to make high fashion out of seaweed or be the first person to hop around the world on a pogo stick.

Of course, there are people with off-beat dreams in Toronto. They just tend to leave home and move out to the coast…

    • 🙂 I did later run workshops in Vancouver, and many in Seattle, full of Vancouver people and you are so right! They’re just wonderful.

How are you doing on that book-finishing thing? Are your books with publishers who nag you and threaten to take back their advances? If they were, you’d finish. If mine weren’t, I’d never finish a book ever, not even once.

Incidentally, there are great ways to simulate the oppressive agony of having a publisher threatening you 🙂 Just ask and I’ll tell you more.

  7. Hi Barbara,
I would loved to be tapped on the shoulder three times a week…but this week I’m on a budget…do you have a payment plan for the year long course. I watched your video and feel like this is big, really big…kind of like you are going to open my eyes to a whole different way of living my life. No more searching for “happiness”, a new way will be revealed. I hope sincerely you can find a budget plan for me.
    thank you,
    Darlia
