Hanging Out

Hanging Out Registration Re-Opens in April 2024

Hanging Out will be the jewel in the crown of Barbara’s Club. To be honest, I think it’s going to be the jewel in the crown of my lifetime’s work. That’s what it feels like. —Barbara Sher, 2012

Barbara called this members-only program Hanging Out, because she wanted it to be like those wonderful moments just hanging out together at her retreats and weekend workshops. Patty Newbold will be your guide now that Barbara is no longer with us.

Barbara put together her most beloved ideas and stories and wrote her best stuff ever for Hanging Out. This was bigger than writing another book. It was a huge job, but every minute was a labor of love for her. And with this program she gives you videos from her retreats and workshops, loads of audio, new interactive stuff and other amazing things we can’t describe here or we’ll go on forever. All this in addition to the exercises that made a big difference to you in the past.

After almost a year HO is still my favourite thing on the internet and in my inbox. So many things I could just read over and over and find something each time. The world didn’t change but I’m different in it. -JD

I’m excited about this exercise. I’ve printed it out to work on over the weekend. Barbara, I look forward to working it through and circling back. You’re a gemstone! -A Hanging Out member in Week 38

Once you’re a member, the rest will be easy. Every week, three times a week, via email, I’ll send you some very special things to read, watch and do. They’re not what you expect, I’m pretty sure of that. As much as you may like my books, what you’re going to find in Hanging Out is very new and very different. You’ll want to make comments, compare notes and talk to the other members of Hanging Out, and that’s exactly what happens here. It changes the whole experience into something entirely new, something most of us are missing and need as much as vitamins and sunshine. The effect on most members has been profound.

You can’t get Hanging Out all at once like a book that ends up on that pile of books you plan to read, and you can’t stick it back on your bookshelf and forget what your life is supposed to be. Barbara learned too much about what’s important for us humans to take that kind of chance.

You’ll receive emails from her every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for a year, announcing the day’s video, audio message, Identity Exercise, Reality Series success story or Brain Candy she prepared for you. Barbara’s Director of Sher Success Teams and WriteSpeak Coach, Patty Newbold, will be reading and responding to your online comments. You’ll also be able to read Barbara’s replies to comments from our first eight years of Hanging Out.

Hanging out has really developed clarity in my life. One thing that I love about you Barbara is that you never tell anyone to just try harder and you don’t shame in any way. You support and encourage which is so very rare. You make sense of the non-sense. This group has provided something wonderful for me. Even the subtle messages are always very powerful. —Michelle

So what is it?

It’s easier to say what it’s not. Hanging Out is not a how-to course or a motivation program. I sometimes think it’s designed for people who have worked too hard and forgot what it’s like to wake up in a goal-free world full of fresh, stimulating ideas, fun and camaraderie.

I’ll always have courses for you on Barbara’s Club so you can find your dreams and achieve your goals, but Hanging Out is not about goal achievement. Instead, it’s more like what one member called “a profound and delicious form of Identity Rehab.”

I absolutely love the idea of Barbara’s Club being integrated into the everyday world—nothing to leave behind—and a consistent source of inspiration. Thank you! —Victoria, by email

If you join us here, Barbara’s emails and online messages will be popping into your life briefly, happily and relentlessly, over and over, waking up your senses, making you laugh and go exploring and, most important of all, helping you remember who you are and how good life is supposed to be.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for creating Hanging Out with Barbara. There have been so many “favorite” posts. One that stands out is your description of how you decorated your apartment with all the glorious references to color. I wanted to sink into one of your armchairs and absorb it all. Finding our originality. Yes. Discovering ways to express it. Yes. Realizing that time is short and excuses long. Yes. Boxing up all our should, would and could and relaxing into today, into now, into this moment. Yes. Finding that joy is the reward for allowing oneself to just be who you are. Yes. So many wonderful lessons I have learned, relearned, and unlearned this year…What I have learned this year has changed my life. For that I am eternally grateful. – A Hanging Out Member at the end of the year

  1. “New members accepted only twice a year” – when are members accepted again?
Also if we choose the monthly payment plan can we cancel (without refund) the subscription and monthly charges after 30 days if we need to?

    • Registration will open again in six months, Anusha. And yes, monthly charges can be canceled at any time. Refunds are offered only during the first 30 days.

    • Hi, Stephanie. The material is pre-written and pre-recorded, but Barbara is online almost every day. If you leave her a comment or a question or share your own story related to the day’s message, she’ll see it quickly and most likely reply to you. With an audience that is all over the world, it would be darn near impossible for Barbara to interact with everyone live in real time, but she’s happy to interact with you live with a small delay to allow her to eat and sleep or, sometimes, to recover from an illness. Barbara no longer makes public appearances at age 83, but she still loves to interact with folks like you, and this is how she pulls it off.

    • Desiree, the reminders are sent to Barbara’s mailing list. Are you on it? If not, look for her photo at the bottom of the page where these comments are.

    • New groups start twice a year. Emails arrive three times a week, announcing the new messages from Barbara that are available to you to read or listen to or watch.

We can stop the emails for a month or more, if that’s helpful. You’ll still have access to all of the new messages if you visit the members-only website.

And when you’re ready to resume those emails, we can start with the latest one received by the group that started when you did or with the one after you paused them. The first makes sure others are reading the same messages at the same time as you, so you can discuss them. The second makes sure you don’t miss any.

What we cannot do is pause a monthly payment plan.

I hope this answers your question, Kate.

  2. Dear Barbara and team,

I saw your ted talk video a few months ago and found it very inspiring.

I am what my friends call an over-qualified under-achiever. I have gone back to university for masters in sociology in my middle age, want to change my career path, and want to go back to singing jazz, the love of my life. But as so many others, I have no money, and am often weighed down by depression, loneliness and the stress of financial problems.

I find myself wanting to join your club. But here is my obstacle, I’m an American and live in Berlin Germany. And most of the people on this platform are in the US, with suggestions that work for the US only, as least from what I was able to read without a membership. Like Barbara, I am a practical person who despises the “think positive and keep a positive attitude”. I am interested in practical solutions and people who want to share their creativity and perhaps resources. If someone has the dream to attend some event in Berlin but doesn’t have the money, I might offer them a place to stay, rather than a “don’t give up on your wish bla bla” comment.

Then I thought, you already have the structure, more or less. So I have a few suggestions:
    – how about going global and sorting your comments by region? maybe people could have a username that includes city and country. And you could have a comment search engine that can sort by region as well as key words. My thought is that, as in your video, if someone says I want to go on a cruise and I have a cruise ticket starting in Berlin, this is no good for someone who lives in the US.

    – it would also be great to have a membership option for 3 months, perhaps with a one time start reduced fee. Or a free one week trial. Like me, I imagine so many of those who actually need and could actually make use of such a platform are on a very tight budget. And it would be very helpful to get an insight into the type of projects and suggestions to see if it’s appropriate to my life situation. As someone with limited money, a 3 month membership would enable me to leave when I’m low on cash and come back when I have the funds again. I think Barbara would agree that flexibility is a key when looking for new solutions.

I thank you for your attention,
    Alda Fontes

    • Thanks for the suggestions, Alda. All Barbara’s Club programs have a healthy number of Germans in them. Germans are probably the largest group after Americans. And quite often someone in France discovers a New Zealander with a very practical solution to a local problem or someone in the UK finds a kindred spirit in Russia.

Hanging Out has a 30-day trial period with a full refund. It also offers an option to pay by the month, which will be posted here as we get close to the start date. We delay it because PayPal will take the second month’s payment 30 days after registration, not 30 days after Hanging Out begins. But we’ll refund both if you need to say goodbye after the second payment but still during the first month.
