What I Learned from Chapter 5

This is your chance to reflect on what you will take away from Chapter 5: Too Busy to Do What I Love and to learn from or contribute to other book club members’ take-aways. Did you try the Portable Dream Deck? Did you check on your feelings? Did you find a good time for a Micro Nervous Breakdown? Did you put your Setup to good use? Let us know. You can also pose questions here about the chapter or what you are discovering about yourself. Please do not be bashful. No matter what you got from this chapter, someone else in your group will benefit from hearing it.

The exercises we completed in Chapter 5: Too Busy to Do What I Love included

  1. I tried to cry. I wanted to cry. I fell asleep instead (in a waiting room).
I’m feeling much calmer two weeks later.

I processed some mail (The Setup) when my body needed rest rather than adventure.

I still feel Too Busy to Do Anything I Love, but I’m wondering if perhaps I do love what I’m doing a little bit or maybe a lot. I continue to look for what I can let go. It’s hard for me. I’m not sure it’s the right path. I also consider accepting less. Much less.

  2. I think the most important takeaway from this chapter for me is the wisdom of working on something I want to do in manageable chunks of time and setting up so that the project-goal is readily accessible. I have a habit of not beginning because I intimidate myself by focusing on the end goal. Using the Setup technique is helping me take action AND enjoy pursuing a learning goal.

  3. Two big takeaways for me this week…

First, I sometimes keep a stray thoughts pocket notebook. It’s similar to the idea of keeping a picket full of index cards. In addition, I usually have my phone with me, so I often default to that, but keeping it physical is nice too. I may switch back and forth as inspiration drives me.

Second, “the setup” is a great idea. One of my recurring wishes, that I can’t seem to find time for, is to write some poetry. I decided to follow this advice and create a form for poem phrase or line ideas. I saved that form as an icon on my phone. This way I can write down one line of thought and I can assemble poems from this pool of ideas later on. I probably still need to schedule myself, but my corner is setup and collecting ideas.
