It’s called impostor syndrome. And left unchecked, it can be a dream killer. Fortunately, there is a solution.

- Discover the perfectly good reasons why fully capable people feel like frauds
- Identify your personal “Competence Type”

- Gain practical, immediately usable tools to unlearn impostor syndrome by becoming a Humble Realist
Speaker: Dr. Valerie Young
Co-founder of Impostor Syndrome Institute, Dr. Valerie Young is widely recognized as the foremost thought leader on impostor syndrome. She has spoken at over 100 colleges and universities in the US, Canada, Japan, Europe, and the UK, including Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and Oxford.
She’s also shared her highly relatable and practical advice at such diverse organizations as Pfizer, Google, P&G, Facebook, Intel, BP, YUM Brands, Microsoft, JP Morgan, PwC, Johnson & Johnson, Moody’s, Society of Women Engineers, Professional Hispanic Engineers, NASA, the National Cancer Institute, and the NBA to name a few.
Valerie’s work has been cited around the world in publications such as Time, Newsweek, Psychology Today, Science, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Sydney Morning Herald, Globe & Mail, on BBC radio and the Ten Percent Happier podcast.
In 2008, she received a 6-figure book deal for her first book. Today her award-winning book, The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women: And Men, Why Capable People Suffer from the Impostor Syndrome and How to Thrive in Spite of It has been translated into nine languages including Turkish and Korean.
Inspired by Barbara Sher and Barbara Winter (author of Making a Living Without a Job), Valerie left her 90-mile-a-day commute to launch the Changing Course Newsletter which she wrote from 1995 to 2001.
In 2003, she realized her dream of working with “the Barbaras” at a 4-day Making Dreams Happen retreat and workshop in Boulder, Colorado.

In March 2020 when the last door shut behind her to start the Hard Lockdown in South Africa, extraverted Doret’s first thought was “I must find a way to not go crazy.”

In this talk she’ll share the lessons she learns on her armchair travels and her best advice to help you get more out of your couch.

Barbara Sher’s Magical Small Step
One of the most important things I learned from my time with Barbara is the enormous value of small steps. If you can’t get started on your dream, dreaming of that big leap, a small step will get you started and take you all the way. If you’re procrastinating on a task, a small step is your best friend. And if you’re planning how to reach a crazy, wild dream, it really pays to think about how small and simple and fun you can make those final steps. I’ll tell you how to find each small step along your journey, so you can stop daydreaming about leaping into your new life only after winning the lottery, getting an inheritance, or retiring.
