Hanging Out Registration Re-Opens in April 2025
Hanging Out will be the jewel in the crown of Barbara’s Club. To be honest, I think it’s going to be the jewel in the crown of my lifetime’s work. That’s what it feels like. —Barbara Sher, 2012
Barbara called this members-only program Hanging Out, because she wanted it to be like those wonderful moments just hanging out together at her retreats and weekend workshops. Patty Newbold will be your guide now that Barbara is no longer with us.

Barbara put together her most beloved ideas and stories and wrote her best stuff ever for Hanging Out. This was bigger than writing another book. It was a huge job, but every minute was a labor of love for her. And with this program she gives you videos from her retreats and workshops, loads of audio, new interactive stuff and other amazing things we can’t describe here or we’ll go on forever. All this in addition to the exercises that made a big difference to you in the past.
After almost a year HO is still my favourite thing on the internet and in my inbox. So many things I could just read over and over and find something each time. The world didn’t change but I’m different in it. -JD
I’m excited about this exercise. I’ve printed it out to work on over the weekend. Barbara, I look forward to working it through and circling back. You’re a gemstone! -A Hanging Out member in Week 38
Once you’re a member, the rest will be easy. Every week, three times a week, via email, I’ll send you some very special things to read, watch and do. They’re not what you expect, I’m pretty sure of that. As much as you may like my books, what you’re going to find in Hanging Out is very new and very different. You’ll want to make comments, compare notes and talk to the other members of Hanging Out, and that’s exactly what happens here. It changes the whole experience into something entirely new, something most of us are missing and need as much as vitamins and sunshine. The effect on most members has been profound.

You can’t get Hanging Out all at once like a book that ends up on that pile of books you plan to read, and you can’t stick it back on your bookshelf and forget what your life is supposed to be. Barbara learned too much about what’s important for us humans to take that kind of chance.
You’ll receive emails from Barbara every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for a year, announcing the day’s video, audio message, Identity Exercise, Reality Series success story or Brain Candy she prepared for you. Barbara’s Director of Sher Success Teams and WriteSpeak Coach, Patty Newbold, will be reading and responding to your online comments. You’ll also be able to read Barbara’s replies to comments from our first eight years of Hanging Out.
Hanging out has really developed clarity in my life. One thing that I love about you Barbara is that you never tell anyone to just try harder and you don’t shame in any way. You support and encourage which is so very rare. You make sense of the non-sense. This group has provided something wonderful for me. Even the subtle messages are always very powerful. —Michelle
So what is it?
It’s easier to say what it’s not. Hanging Out is not a how-to course or a motivation program. I sometimes think it’s designed for people who have worked too hard and forgot what it’s like to wake up in a goal-free world full of fresh, stimulating ideas, fun and camaraderie.
I’ll always have courses for you on Barbara’s Club so you can find your dreams and achieve your goals, but Hanging Out is not about goal achievement. Instead, it’s more like what one member called “a profound and delicious form of Identity Rehab.”
I absolutely love the idea of Barbara’s Club being integrated into the everyday world—nothing to leave behind—and a consistent source of inspiration. Thank you! —Victoria, by email
If you join us here, Barbara’s emails and online messages will be popping into your life briefly, happily and relentlessly, over and over, waking up your senses, making you laugh and go exploring and, most important of all, helping you remember who you are and how good life is supposed to be.
You’ll receive emails from Barbara every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for a year, announcing the day’s video, audio message, Identity Exercise, Reality Series success story or Brain Candy she prepared for you. You’ll also be able to read Barbara’s replies to comments from our first eight years of Hanging Out, before she passed away.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for creating Hanging Out with Barbara. There have been so many “favorite” posts. One that stands out is your description of how you decorated your apartment with all the glorious references to color. I wanted to sink into one of your armchairs and absorb it all. Finding our originality. Yes. Discovering ways to express it. Yes. Realizing that time is short and excuses long. Yes. Boxing up all our should, would and could and relaxing into today, into now, into this moment. Yes. Finding that joy is the reward for allowing oneself to just be who you are. Yes. So many wonderful lessons I have learned, relearned, and unlearned this year…What I have learned this year has changed my life. For that I am eternally grateful. – A Hanging Out Member at the end of the year

Hi, I’m having the “password” problem. Would you please e-mail the information so that I can sign into “hanging out”? Thanks
Just happy to have joined with no much thinking. With this price the program purchase is a no-brainer – thank you so much for that !
Now I am curious about what comes next AND I find the gold fisches should have some plants in their little fish tank sub-universe 🙂
Greetings from Germany
Kathrin
Love the goldfish. Hope they’ll be a regular feature!
Great to be back in contact with you.
Hi!
All I can say is I’m thrilled to have this opportunity with Barbara and to be in the company of so many like-minded souls. Thank you Barbara, I just love you and the work you do! The scanners retreats have always been a dream but I could never get to any of them. Barbara, I really discovered you after moving from DC to CA in 2001 and, WOW, was yours a powerful message for me. Not to mention the humor!!! Sad that I never saw you on PBS in DC but oh so happy I eventually finally found you on KQED : ) – have read and worked through some of your wonderful books over the years which have brought me down some interesting paths but only to dabble and the rest has been stuck in my head : [ It’s been reassuring to know that my expansive list of interests isn’t crazy. However, managing it all on a day-to day basis is another story and where I seem to get myself stuck in corners. So I’m really looking forward to “hanging out” with you this year.
One housekeeping question: Is your mailing list here the same as your regular newsletter? I’m already on the latter and not sure if I needed to sign up for this one as well.
Newsletter goes to everyone. Hanging Out emails go only to members, to let you know there is something new for you to read on the website every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Thanks!
Will the trio of emails begin next week? I’m thinking I missed one, yesterday…? I received the newsletter email, with the free stuff link, which was great. But I was thinking that there would be members-only emails coming, every other day? I did receive the “welcome” and “how to” emails, with I figured out that I need to check this web site for updates…. but I see no update made for us, yesterday? Thanks for any help you can offer!
Your trio will start on Monday. You didn’t miss anything, because you’ll start where everyone else did. The comments there will still be warm 🙂
There was a members-only email on Friday, Emily. It was called ‘Bugs Always Seem to be Having Such a Good Time’ (or something close to that – I call it ‘Bugs&Rubinstein”). Did you get that?
Thank you, I did find that and thought it was from Wed. (!) I am the Poster Child for distracted Scanners 🙂 Thanks for all you do. I can’t wait for Monday (and how often to any of us get to say that?).
I tried confirming on the link but keep coming back to this page – hope I am confirmed, nevertheless.
I am so excited by this new venture. I used Barbara’s books years ago when I was reinventing myself – looks like I am in another reinventing process now. So here’s to all of us in Hanging Out With Barbara in this year of 2012!!!!!!
Greetings to Barbara and all,
I signed up for Hanging Out a few days ago and am really looking forward to the inspiration and camaraderie. Barbara, I have been a fan of yours ever since Wishcraft first came out, and have used its ideas many times to generate change in my life. I am an amateur folk musician, and my latest career adventure is learning how to become a creativity coach (facilitator of creativity) to support others as they discover and pursue their heart’s desires.
I feel I’m going to be in good company here! Thanks so much! Heidi
Heidi, I am also drawn in by the Creativity Coaching angle. So, here’s to us!
I am super excited to Hang out with you Barbara! I’ve been inspired by your books for many years and started a successful business after reading one of them. I too, though, thought there was something seriously wrong with me because I seem to be jack of all trades and master of … Well, some… Until I read Refusing to Choose! What a relief! And now I’m ready for a new chapter of my own making!! Thanks! This is gonna be fun!!!
Cyn
Dear Barbara,
dear all,
I am glad that I have joined. Having Barbara Cher coaching me to live the life of my dreams is already a dream come true. 🙂
I have a questions with the teleconferences. When we are so many people calling in can I just speak during the conference? I mean wont that be too chaotic?
Hi Iris, and welcome! For everyone who signed up here before midnight (ET) Monday, April 30, Iris is talking about the telephone call we’ll have together on June 9. One thing I’ve considered doing is ask you all for your questions well in advance, then take a poll on which are the most popular questions, and spend our time answering them.
(If I could figure out how to avoid chaos, I’d add a chat element to the call, but we’ll have a lot of people and I don’t think that would work.)
I’d be happy to spend the whole time talking about something important, like how to figure out what you really want (and tell a few stories that might enlighten that process). Or I could talk about Resistance, just a good, old-fashioned lecture. We’ve got a lot of flexibility so let me know what you wish would happen in our elephone time together.
No way I’d miss this. Barbara is the dream whisperer. She’ll help you be better no matter what you’re up to.
I’ve been grateful to have her voice in my head for 20 years now since reading her first book.
This is going to be good…
Oh, I love this…the “Dream Whisperer”! XX
Dear Barbara
Ive written a few times on this page but its never been published. I had written saying the 2pm calls were 2 am in Singapore and asked if you might consider changing the time a little, to maybe 12 noon EST or earlier.
Thanks
We had some bugs in the technology that had things on different times – you’d get notified on Pacific Time, get your email on E.U. time, etc. and your welcome letter in NZ time. It took a few days to get it straightened out. (Sounds massively difficult and confusing to me, and how Patty waded into that swamp and whipped it into shape is beyond me, bless her brain.) Somehow it’s okay now. But that’s why you weren’t published.
2 a.m. is a problem, Nulankannu, I can see that. We’ll talk about it and see if there’s something we can come up with.
