Hanging Out

Hanging Out Registration Re-Opens in October 2025

Hanging Out will be the jewel in the crown of Barbara’s Club. To be honest, I think it’s going to be the jewel in the crown of my lifetime’s work. That’s what it feels like. —Barbara Sher, 2012

Barbara called this members-only program Hanging Out, because she wanted it to be like those wonderful moments just hanging out together at her retreats and weekend workshops. Our Sher Success Teams Director will be your guide now that Barbara is no longer with us.

Barbara put together her most beloved ideas and stories and wrote her best stuff ever for Hanging Out. This was bigger than writing another book. It was a huge job, but every minute was a labor of love for her. And with this program she gives you videos from her retreats and workshops, loads of audio, new interactive stuff and other amazing things we can’t describe here or we’ll go on forever. All this in addition to the exercises that made a big difference to you in the past.

After almost a year HO is still my favourite thing on the internet and in my inbox. So many things I could just read over and over and find something each time. The world didn’t change but I’m different in it. -JD

I’m excited about this exercise. I’ve printed it out to work on over the weekend. Barbara, I look forward to working it through and circling back. You’re a gemstone! -A Hanging Out member in Week 38

Once you’re a member, the rest will be easy. Every week, three times a week, via email, I’ll send you some very special things to read, watch and do. They’re not what you expect, I’m pretty sure of that. As much as you may like my books, what you’re going to find in Hanging Out is very new and very different. You’ll want to make comments, compare notes and talk to the other members of Hanging Out, and that’s exactly what happens here. It changes the whole experience into something entirely new, something most of us are missing and need as much as vitamins and sunshine. The effect on most members has been profound.

You can’t get Hanging Out all at once like a book that ends up on that pile of books you plan to read, and you can’t stick it back on your bookshelf and forget what your life is supposed to be. Barbara learned too much about what’s important for us humans to take that kind of chance.

You’ll receive emails from Barbara every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for a year, announcing the day’s video, audio message, Identity Exercise, Reality Series success story or Brain Candy she prepared for you. Barbara’s Director of Sher Success Teams will be reading and responding to your online comments. You’ll also be able to read Barbara’s replies to comments from our first eight years of Hanging Out.

Hanging out has really developed clarity in my life. One thing that I love about you Barbara is that you never tell anyone to just try harder and you don’t shame in any way. You support and encourage which is so very rare. You make sense of the non-sense. This group has provided something wonderful for me. Even the subtle messages are always very powerful. —Michelle

So what is it?

It’s easier to say what it’s not. Hanging Out is not a how-to course or a motivation program. I sometimes think it’s designed for people who have worked too hard and forgot what it’s like to wake up in a goal-free world full of fresh, stimulating ideas, fun and camaraderie.

I’ll always have courses for you on Barbara’s Club so you can find your dreams and achieve your goals, but Hanging Out is not about goal achievement. Instead, it’s more like what one member called “a profound and delicious form of Identity Rehab.”

I absolutely love the idea of Barbara’s Club being integrated into the everyday world—nothing to leave behind—and a consistent source of inspiration. Thank you! —Victoria, by email

If you join us here, Barbara’s emails and online messages will be popping into your life briefly, happily and relentlessly, over and over, waking up your senses, making you laugh and go exploring and, most important of all, helping you remember who you are and how good life is supposed to be.

You’ll receive emails from Barbara every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for a year, announcing the day’s video, audio message, Identity Exercise, Reality Series success story or Brain Candy she prepared for you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for creating Hanging Out with Barbara. There have been so many “favorite” posts. One that stands out is your description of how you decorated your apartment with all the glorious references to color. I wanted to sink into one of your armchairs and absorb it all. Finding our originality. Yes. Discovering ways to express it. Yes. Realizing that time is short and excuses long. Yes. Boxing up all our should, would and could and relaxing into today, into now, into this moment. Yes. Finding that joy is the reward for allowing oneself to just be who you are. Yes. So many wonderful lessons I have learned, relearned, and unlearned this year…What I have learned this year has changed my life. For that I am eternally grateful. – A Hanging Out Member at the end of the year

  1. Yes, it’s perfectly fine to send me stuff. I’m gone to Nevada for much of this month, leaving May 4. Not exactly sure of return date, but please send me stuff.
    Mary Ann

  2. Update:
I’ve just discovered that my local public library computers DO have the on screen keyboard tool. So there is something to deter keyboard loggers. I had to do a little searching for it… but there it was. I wouldn’t have thought to seek it out had it not been for this thread. A reminder of the many resources out in the world that we don’t notice until sometime says a word nudging in another direction.

  3. I’m 46 now but when I was in my teenager got my first Barbara Sher book. It wasnt’ until I had three kids etc. that I was lost (once again) and saw her on pbs. then went to buy yet another one of her books, took a class with one of her protiges and started two businesses…I used my touch stones etc. combined my talents and am in the middle of one successful biz supporting the one that is teetering, which is the one that required the most.so…I am looking forward to the next step…especially with marketing…can’t wait for the beginning of june…seems like it is too far away.
where do we get the link for the party I missed…I was out selling my product that day=I sold out…first time ever! so exciting…thank you barbara, I always thought that because I spun three things at once and moved quickly from one thing to the next that something was wrong with me…thank god I found you and your wonderfully liberating and inspiring philosophy…and I do go in to the bathroom every once in a while and have a good cry and then carry on!

  4. Dear Barbara

I live in Singapore and the time difference is very big, your 2 pm is 2 am in Singapore.. Would you consider changing the time to 12 noon perhaps? And is using twitter a must during the calls and to be a member? Can we do without it and just emails? or write on the site/forum etc/

    Thanks
    Nal

  5. Wasn’t able to make the party – and looks like I missed the deadline. I, too, was hoping there was a monthly payment plan…..

    • You only missed the deadline for the June 9 telephone call, Carine. You can still join Hanging Out with Barbara Sher and you’ll be a charter member if you join before Friday. Re monthly payments, we’re working on it and I think will be able to announce something next weekend. The year-long membership offers a big discount, but it might be easier for a lot of people to pay monthly. As soon as we get a bunch of other things sorted out (I think Patty’s holding up a bunch of wires with her hand and that’s why things are working right now 🙂 ) we’ll get straight to work on that. Watch this space. 🙂 And be sure to sign up for my newsletter! Everything will be announced there.

  6. Barbara,
Sorry I missed the launch call on Saturday, I was up in the air then, returning from a business trip. I was already thinking about signing up for this, and got kicked into gear by an email yesterday from Flora that she was looking at my pictures from our retreat in Italy. Need to get that amazing time back! Am SO looking forward to hanging out with you!
    Love, Kay

  7. I signed up for Hanging Out with Barbara (yea!), but I can’t get the “confirmation to receive emails” to work; it keeps bringing me back to this page. Please accept this as a confirmation to send me emails, videos, everything. Okay?
    Hope this works. Thanks much.
Henrietta Wolf, the person at the idea party in March who wants to create a doll. I did go the a doll show, and it was great, but I’m kind of stuck. I look forward to getting unstuck by hanging out with Barbara. Again, thanks.

  8. My to-do list includes caring for my father. I started after losing my mother to a terminal illness 3 years ago. I’ve read your books as a way to keep my dreams going when things are tough. I really appreciate your talent in helping people.

I love the idea of “hanging out” with you but I’m a bit on the introverted side and don’t know if I’ll feel comfortable participating. I’m a kid at heart but the one that takes forever to play with the other kids. I’m wondering if I would be better off sticking to your books and newsletters.

    Thoughts?

    • Dear Isolated Introvert,

I’m on the introvert side myself, I like to meditate over my thoughts and draw upon a conclusion when I’m good and ready, but I also think excitement is contagious. I can’t say for certain, but I think that as you hear others talking and you start see things happen you won’t be able to contain yourself and whether through email or from the rooftops you will share your gift.
I have been perusing “Refuse to Choose” for the last 9 months and watching any video of Barbaras I could get my hands on, and well I am nervous that I will be called to the front of the classroom, I can tell you from my last year of experience that just as Barbara says “Isolation IS the Dream Killer.” I am taking the chance and have invested in myself by joining Hanging with Barbara. I hope that time comes for you too!

So now I’m feeling a bit weird sharing my thoughts and I don’t even know if I answered your question or even if I was supposed to so I am going to abruptly leave now.

      From,
      the introverted mountain yodeler

P.S. This message was not endorsed and is not a paid advertisement and I don’t live in the mountains and I do not yodel.

      • Dear Introverted Moutain Yodeler,

Thank you so much for your note. I’ve been feeling rather dumb for writing it. You answered perfectly and your words really touched me. I appreciate the time you took to share your thoughts. I think the best part of joining is that I won’t be so isolated anymore; I’ll have people like you and Barbara to listen to (so keep speaking up).

I’ve also watched all the Barbara Sher videos I could find. I think one day I’ll run into her and act like I’m seeing a long lost friend. I think I’ll join too. I figure it’s a year long so I should be able to muster some courage by the 11th month. 🙂

        Yours Truly;
        The Group joining Introvert.

        • Isolated introvert: I too am an introvert, a reporter to boot and have a very distinctive first name, so I am careful about where and what I post. Today I will sign up for Hanging Out (if my credit card behaves) and I do so feeling very safe. I know I can get the feedback I need here. I live in a small town and sharing with family and friends doesn’t allow me to be as open as I like.
The point is, I think you will be in very good company.
