Hanging Out

Hanging Out Registration Re-Opens in April 2025

Hanging Out will be the jewel in the crown of Barbara’s Club. To be honest, I think it’s going to be the jewel in the crown of my lifetime’s work. That’s what it feels like. —Barbara Sher, 2012

Barbara called this members-only program Hanging Out, because she wanted it to be like those wonderful moments just hanging out together at her retreats and weekend workshops. Patty Newbold will be your guide now that Barbara is no longer with us.

Barbara put together her most beloved ideas and stories and wrote her best stuff ever for Hanging Out. This was bigger than writing another book. It was a huge job, but every minute was a labor of love for her. And with this program she gives you videos from her retreats and workshops, loads of audio, new interactive stuff and other amazing things we can’t describe here or we’ll go on forever. All this in addition to the exercises that made a big difference to you in the past.

After almost a year HO is still my favourite thing on the internet and in my inbox. So many things I could just read over and over and find something each time. The world didn’t change but I’m different in it. -JD

I’m excited about this exercise. I’ve printed it out to work on over the weekend. Barbara, I look forward to working it through and circling back. You’re a gemstone! -A Hanging Out member in Week 38

Once you’re a member, the rest will be easy. Every week, three times a week, via email, I’ll send you some very special things to read, watch and do. They’re not what you expect, I’m pretty sure of that. As much as you may like my books, what you’re going to find in Hanging Out is very new and very different. You’ll want to make comments, compare notes and talk to the other members of Hanging Out, and that’s exactly what happens here. It changes the whole experience into something entirely new, something most of us are missing and need as much as vitamins and sunshine. The effect on most members has been profound.

You can’t get Hanging Out all at once like a book that ends up on that pile of books you plan to read, and you can’t stick it back on your bookshelf and forget what your life is supposed to be. Barbara learned too much about what’s important for us humans to take that kind of chance.

You’ll receive emails from Barbara every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for a year, announcing the day’s video, audio message, Identity Exercise, Reality Series success story or Brain Candy she prepared for you. Barbara’s Director of Sher Success Teams and WriteSpeak Coach, Patty Newbold, will be reading and responding to your online comments. You’ll also be able to read Barbara’s replies to comments from our first eight years of Hanging Out.

Hanging out has really developed clarity in my life. One thing that I love about you Barbara is that you never tell anyone to just try harder and you don’t shame in any way. You support and encourage which is so very rare. You make sense of the non-sense. This group has provided something wonderful for me. Even the subtle messages are always very powerful. —Michelle

So what is it?

It’s easier to say what it’s not. Hanging Out is not a how-to course or a motivation program. I sometimes think it’s designed for people who have worked too hard and forgot what it’s like to wake up in a goal-free world full of fresh, stimulating ideas, fun and camaraderie.

I’ll always have courses for you on Barbara’s Club so you can find your dreams and achieve your goals, but Hanging Out is not about goal achievement. Instead, it’s more like what one member called “a profound and delicious form of Identity Rehab.”

I absolutely love the idea of Barbara’s Club being integrated into the everyday world—nothing to leave behind—and a consistent source of inspiration. Thank you! —Victoria, by email

If you join us here, Barbara’s emails and online messages will be popping into your life briefly, happily and relentlessly, over and over, waking up your senses, making you laugh and go exploring and, most important of all, helping you remember who you are and how good life is supposed to be.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for creating Hanging Out with Barbara. There have been so many “favorite” posts. One that stands out is your description of how you decorated your apartment with all the glorious references to color. I wanted to sink into one of your armchairs and absorb it all. Finding our originality. Yes. Discovering ways to express it. Yes. Realizing that time is short and excuses long. Yes. Boxing up all our should, would and could and relaxing into today, into now, into this moment. Yes. Finding that joy is the reward for allowing oneself to just be who you are. Yes. So many wonderful lessons I have learned, relearned, and unlearned this year…What I have learned this year has changed my life. For that I am eternally grateful. – A Hanging Out Member at the end of the year

  1. Hi Barbara,

I thought you should know that when you sent the TED talk about Eric Whitacres Virtual Choir, it had a real impact on me. I am making my own attempt at forming a virtual choir. We just recently had a performance of my musical and I have a Youtube you might like to watch.

    http://youtu.be/YJgxoJ2k3bI

Also, A college reporter has taken in interest in the musical and I pasted in some of the questions with answers.

What does creating a virtual choir mean to you?

When I get a moment, and I close my eyes. I can picture a garden for Virtual Choir – He Lives. And I can picture the soloists showing in pools of water, or fruits of the trees. I am starting to picture animals too. The things is…I can’t draw beyond stick figures.

When will the virtual choir be available for view? Where will people be able to find it?
I hope that the virtual choir will be available to view on July24 of this year. I pray the Lord will bring the right people together to work on this. Eric Whitacre didn’t do it alone, and I think it unwise for me to do so also. I could use an after effects team and an audio team. This is of course, based on the assumption that people will overcome their fears and submit. I promise I will not let you sound bad and will sweeten your audio:)

People will be able to find it on victorialoveland.com/virtualchoir

How did you hear about the virtual choir? I belong to a club called “Barbara Sher’s club”. She is not religious in the slightest, yet she has such a vision of the Divine Nature of human beings. In her club, she emailed us the link to Eric Whitacre’s virtual choir and his TED talk, and I was awestruck by the beauty, and the ability to bring voices across the globe together in song.

    • We use gravatar.com. Add your avatar there, and it will show up here (and on other sites that use it if you comment or have commented on them) within an hour.

  2. What’s the difference between registering for a full year at $226 and going monthly at $29 aside from the obvious? The reason I ask is because I only have $250 to my name.

    Thanks you.

    • Dino, either price will get you the same Hanging Out experience. The monthly price is higher because it’s bunch more work for us.

  3. I’m not typically this techno-lame, but I think I’m missing out on some of the benefits of this group. Are there regular emails that go out to the HOWBS members? I’ve been a member since September of ’13, and my profile tells me I’m signed up for them but I never receive anything other than Barbara’s general newsletters, which I’ve gotten for years now. In her recent newsletter, Barbara mentioned her fitth telephone get-together with her second year members. Are there calls with first ‘yearers’ too? Admittedly, I am not on this sight as regularly as I could be, but is there anyway to know when new things post that I could/should be looking at? Sorry, but I’m a little lost on how this group is supposed to work, and yet, I know I need it desparately.

Barbara, you convinced me to go to college (via your book: It’s Only Too Late If You Don’t Start Now) at the age of 46 to get my degree in Meeting and Event management, even though I had alwasy stunk as a student and vowed I’d never return to school. A two year degree took me four years since I worked full time and schooled part time, but alas, I did it! I gradauted this past December, at the age of 50, received the Outstanding Student Award, and was the commencement speaker at graduation. I incorporated my own private event consulting business and am ready for business. Go me, right?

Only problem is, I feel completely clueless as to what to do now. I’ve worked hard, built the foundation to live the life I want to live, and feel passionate about my chosen field–but there is still so much I want to do, even outside of the field. Please Barbara, I need your sage advise and counsel. I blame you for getting me into this mess (wink-wink). Now you’ve gotta help me out! 🙂

    Thanks!

    Thanks!!

    • The calls are in the second year only, Silvia, six of them over the course of the year. You are indeed missing out on the emails, and we did try to notify you of them. I have just sent you a new notice. You must click the confirmation link to start the emails coming.

    • So, after posting the above, I just received my confirmation email saying “Welcome, you are now a member.” As noted in my originating email/post, I’ve been paying my membership since September 2013. Why would I just get this now? Please help, and thanks?

      • I wonder why your notifications of the missing emails didn’t get to me? Well, I guess I have officially confirmed my membership now, but now my quiestion is, when will I become a “second year?” In September of this year when I have been a paying member for one year, or in March of 2015 when this activiation reaches a year? I can’t believe this has been six months of paid memberships without receiving notification. That’s a bit troubling… 🙁

        • Drives me nuts when I can’t reach someone who signs up for Hanging Out and doesn’t get signed up for the emails, too, but some don’t actually want the reminders. (Personally, I love them.)

When would you like Year Two to begin? I just set you up to receive the same emails as others who joined when you did, but I can reset your email subscription to begin with the first one, and you can go through the messages as if you joined this week. (And we would not charge you for the gap between years.) What’s your pleasure, Silvia?

          • Life is crazy busy for everybody so emails are welcome reminders! I’d prefer year 2 to begin in September, the year mark from when I originally joined/paid. I’ll work hard at catching up on the exercises, videos, audios, and more so that I am right up to speed with where I need to be.

Thanks so much. Appreciate the quick response. Have a good one!

            -S-

          • That’s great, Silvia. Year Two offers even more contact with Barbara, through the group phone calls. But she reads all of the comments on all of the Year One messages and replies to many of them.

  4. Webmaster,

I made 3 contributions for the Mary Ann GoGetFunding and now do not know how to download Barbara’s gifts. I rec’d Barbara’s Sun. Mar 9 2014 newsletter saying folks were obtaining their gifts, but I can’t figure out how. I still have the emails acknowledging my contributions. I feel like the dumbest cluck. Can you help me? Thanks.

    • I think the gal who sends out the download invitations is actually still packaging up kilims. If you have not received yours yet, they should arrive very soon.

      • And it may have been confusing if you sent three contributions that added up to a gift….. I know how confusing it was to figure out who was supposed to get what on my site…… Thankfully, my contributors helped me out when I emailed them…..most just wanted my dream to come true, but those who were in awe of the gift they would receive were honest and forthright…,

  5. I would like to start a childrens online magazine. I have written several issues. It’s about teaching people to find their own earth language. It goes along with a book I wrote called Speaking Earth. I would like to get it out at the earliest next month or at least by Earth Day

My obstacle is I work full time and I’m not very adapt at technology. I’d be grateful
    for any suggestions

    Many thanks,

    Maureen

  6. Blue Sky wish for this website: A search function that searches comments! Ack, I want to reply to a comment Barbara posted yesterday, but I’m now on a different computer and I don’t remember what page that was on. No clue at all. =(

    • We use gravatar.com. You set up a photo or other avatar to go with your email address there, and it appears with your comments on all websites that use Gravatar. It takes an hour or two after you set it up to appear here on Hanging Out.

  7. It is November 30, and I am utterly lost. The comment link in my e-mail, barbarasclub.com/hanging out/calls/comment isn’t working, and I can find no way whatsoever to find those comments here so I can respond to them here either. Webmaster, what shall we do about this? My e-mail in-box is crammed with comments to the November 9 call, which I have no way to respond to.
