Hanging Out Registration Re-Opens in April 2025
Hanging Out will be the jewel in the crown of Barbara’s Club. To be honest, I think it’s going to be the jewel in the crown of my lifetime’s work. That’s what it feels like. —Barbara Sher, 2012
Barbara called this members-only program Hanging Out, because she wanted it to be like those wonderful moments just hanging out together at her retreats and weekend workshops. Patty Newbold will be your guide now that Barbara is no longer with us.

Barbara put together her most beloved ideas and stories and wrote her best stuff ever for Hanging Out. This was bigger than writing another book. It was a huge job, but every minute was a labor of love for her. And with this program she gives you videos from her retreats and workshops, loads of audio, new interactive stuff and other amazing things we can’t describe here or we’ll go on forever. All this in addition to the exercises that made a big difference to you in the past.
After almost a year HO is still my favourite thing on the internet and in my inbox. So many things I could just read over and over and find something each time. The world didn’t change but I’m different in it. -JD
I’m excited about this exercise. I’ve printed it out to work on over the weekend. Barbara, I look forward to working it through and circling back. You’re a gemstone! -A Hanging Out member in Week 38
Once you’re a member, the rest will be easy. Every week, three times a week, via email, I’ll send you some very special things to read, watch and do. They’re not what you expect, I’m pretty sure of that. As much as you may like my books, what you’re going to find in Hanging Out is very new and very different. You’ll want to make comments, compare notes and talk to the other members of Hanging Out, and that’s exactly what happens here. It changes the whole experience into something entirely new, something most of us are missing and need as much as vitamins and sunshine. The effect on most members has been profound.

You can’t get Hanging Out all at once like a book that ends up on that pile of books you plan to read, and you can’t stick it back on your bookshelf and forget what your life is supposed to be. Barbara learned too much about what’s important for us humans to take that kind of chance.
You’ll receive emails from Barbara every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for a year, announcing the day’s video, audio message, Identity Exercise, Reality Series success story or Brain Candy she prepared for you. Barbara’s Director of Sher Success Teams and WriteSpeak Coach, Patty Newbold, will be reading and responding to your online comments. You’ll also be able to read Barbara’s replies to comments from our first eight years of Hanging Out.
Hanging out has really developed clarity in my life. One thing that I love about you Barbara is that you never tell anyone to just try harder and you don’t shame in any way. You support and encourage which is so very rare. You make sense of the non-sense. This group has provided something wonderful for me. Even the subtle messages are always very powerful. —Michelle
So what is it?
It’s easier to say what it’s not. Hanging Out is not a how-to course or a motivation program. I sometimes think it’s designed for people who have worked too hard and forgot what it’s like to wake up in a goal-free world full of fresh, stimulating ideas, fun and camaraderie.
I’ll always have courses for you on Barbara’s Club so you can find your dreams and achieve your goals, but Hanging Out is not about goal achievement. Instead, it’s more like what one member called “a profound and delicious form of Identity Rehab.”
I absolutely love the idea of Barbara’s Club being integrated into the everyday world—nothing to leave behind—and a consistent source of inspiration. Thank you! —Victoria, by email
If you join us here, Barbara’s emails and online messages will be popping into your life briefly, happily and relentlessly, over and over, waking up your senses, making you laugh and go exploring and, most important of all, helping you remember who you are and how good life is supposed to be.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for creating Hanging Out with Barbara. There have been so many “favorite” posts. One that stands out is your description of how you decorated your apartment with all the glorious references to color. I wanted to sink into one of your armchairs and absorb it all. Finding our originality. Yes. Discovering ways to express it. Yes. Realizing that time is short and excuses long. Yes. Boxing up all our should, would and could and relaxing into today, into now, into this moment. Yes. Finding that joy is the reward for allowing oneself to just be who you are. Yes. So many wonderful lessons I have learned, relearned, and unlearned this year…What I have learned this year has changed my life. For that I am eternally grateful. – A Hanging Out Member at the end of the year

Looking forward to revisiting all the lovely messages from Barbara, Patty and everyone else who is Hanging out!
Welcome back, Sharon!
Good morning from California,
please explain the community aspect if the year long “Hanging out” membership:
1. Where and how can I meet others? Are there live Zoom calls? An app? An online platform forum? A Facebook group? If Zoom, what time and day would we meet?
2. I get a lot of emails and feel anxious to miss the membership ones. Is there an online place I could go 3x a week to see the newest daily inspiration?
3. Will there be in-person retreats we could attend for added cost to meet other haning-out members?
Thank you for clarifying!
Sylvia
Oh, I am so glad you asked, Sylvia!
1. No Zoom calls, because we’re a global group living in almost every time zone. And no Facebook group, because some of our members are not Facebook members. Instead, we have online discussions, using the comments feature on this site, as you did to ask this question and I did to reply to you. There will be a place for comments under each of Barbara’s brilliant pieces. And you’ll be able to read comments posted all the way back to the 8 years that Barbara was alive and replying to members.
2. There is a page, and it’s this one! Once you are registered, you can use that login form at the top, which will show you a list of links to every message from Barbara that we’ve notified you about in those emails. If you missed a week or two, it’s really easy to jump right back in. After you’ve received all 157 messages, the links to them will be there for as long as we can keep Barbara’s Club alive, and you can return and join the discussion again or just watch, listen, or read as you wish.
3. Currently, there are no retreats or gatherings scheduled, but we did have one last year in Cleveland, so who knows? Feel free to post a comment asking who’s in your part of the world–or in any other part you’d like to visit, too. We will happily forward emails from members to other members they want to get to know better.
Lee, I too loved that exercise of Barbara’s. It’s one of those exercises that just sticks with you. I think it was to teach yourself to trust that we know more than we think we know and that our identity shines through no matter.
How Patty and Ruthann, I’m missing HO too. I have in for many years and would love to catch up.
Dear Best Barbara Sher,
I am recalling your Workshop I took many years ago in New York City. It was amazing. We broke up into groups of two or three and somehow we were able to pick up information about the other person. I remember after your Workshop I was able to pick up information about a stranger I met at a party.. How did I do that? I want to learn how to do that again, to tap into my intuition…if that is what that was. . What is it in me that kmows what is true, real? Please let me know if you will be giving another Workshop like this again. I want to be able to tap into that inner knowledge again .
I am pretty much an “ageless” almost 83-year-old and I really want to connect with you again. Please let me hear from you.
Many thanks and all best.
Lee Walther.

She passed away 4 yrs ago so they aren’t running workshops.
Looking forward to October 2024. Will you email to remind me to sign up, now that I’m on the waiting list?
Yes!
I read the invite to “Hanging Out”. If I understand what I read and this is my question, I’ve been in and paid for “Hanging Out” in the past, these timeframes I’ve previously paid for allow me access? I join both 1st and 2nd years, am I still a member?
Thanks much,
Ruthann Essig
Hi, Ruthann. Yes, once a member, always a member. And one from the second week after Barbara launched Hanging Out: how fortunate for our other members that you’re still around. Welcome back.
So happy that this continues for me year after year. It has been the best regular experience of my life.
Hi, I joined, but I haven’t received anything yet.
Thanks!
Hi, Jodie. Be sure to check your spam or junk folder, as AWeber reports successfully delivering messages to your email provider.
Are there recorded videos, or video conferencing meetings (for example Zoom) in Hanging Out?
Hanging Out starts each week with a short video or audio clip from Barbara to get us thinking.
There doesn’t seem to be any active groups in London, UK. It’s a shame really
The pandemic slowed down all of our Success Teams leaders, Chris, but they are slowly beginning to launch new teams. We would welcome a new leader in London if anyone is interested: http://shersuccessteams.com/works.htm
There is nothing in australia either. Not sure i would pay close to $400 for me when there doesn’t seem to be much going on right now.
Check in with Helen Schwencke, Brisbane (West End), Queensland at helen.schwencke@gmail.com
She has lots going now and might be a mentor if you’re elsewhere.
Hanging Out opens its doors again on April 6th, if you’d prefer an online option that’s much more exploratory and less goal-driven than Sher Success Teams.
Hi Kaylee, I’ve spent the last year doing Hanging Out, also from Oz. You are right that the group interaction that Barbara envisaged mostly isn’t there right now, but for me the value is still there. It is there because the content is so good, the historical comments are there to give you insight from other people’s experiences and Patty is actively providing insights both from Barbara’s perspective and her own. The other thing is this isn’t really a one year fee, the content stays open to you so that if you get behind (like me) you can still finish, plus you can stay involved in the future. It is an investment, but it will keep reminding you to make a long-term shift you towards spending your time in ways that bring you more satisfaction and enjoyment, for me that has been worth every cent.
Hi Chris, I’m in London, UK. Do you want to make something happen!?
