Week 14: Turning Dreams Into Goals, Part 1

We start our reading of Chapter 11: Turning Dreams Into Goals this week by reading up to where Exercise 30 begins. We will complete the first three exercises, too. You will want to set aside 20 or 30 minutes for each of them.

Here is what we will be doing this week:

Exercise 27: The Highlights Of My Life

Exercise 28: Okay, Start Dreaming

Exercise 29: Shorten The List

Remember to continue Exercise 23: Make A Six-Week Standing Appointment With Yourself this week, too.

What I Learned from Chapter 10

All I can say at the end of this chapter is “Whew!” But I hope you can add a few more insights. This is your chance to reflect on what you will take away from Chapter 10: The Courage To Live Your Life and to learn from or contribute to other book club members’ take-aways. You can also pose questions here about the chapter or what you are discovering about yourself.

The exercises we completed in Chapter 10: The Courage To Live Your Life included

  • Outrageous Fantasies
  • Two-Week Unannounced Strike In Goods And Services
  • Your “Don’t-Do” List
  • Make A Six-Week Standing Appointment With Yourself
  • The Silent Scream
  • Your Thirty-Year Plan
  • Test Your Courage

Be sure to include your final report on your Two-Week Unannounced Strike In Goods And Services here, too.

Please subscribe to future comments on this page or check back here on Wednesday evening or Thursday morning for new ones.

That’s it for this week! Watch for your weekly email on Thursday or just log in again then. If you’re not getting the weekly announcements and you would like to add them, please send an email to me at webmaster@barbarasclub.com. I can also help with comment subscriptions if you need it. Until next week!

Exercise 26: Test Your Courage

  1. In how many ways do you forfeit your right to your life? Through conflict, or fear of other people’s anger, complaining instead of acting, etc.?
  2. Do you ever hear yourself saying, “Oh, my [husband, wife, kids, boss] would never let me do that”?
  3. Do you cave in to other people’s tantrums because they make you feel so bad?
  4. How did your childhood family feel about expressing emotions?
  5. Which tasks do you enjoy the most? Which do you enjoy the least? Why do you think you feel that way?
  6. Do you have people in your life who take advantage of you? Can you figure out why you let them do it?
  7. What do you really think of people who give themselves what they need? What did your childhood family think of such people?
  8. Are you actually going to try the exercises in this chapter? Do you think you’ll really get an assistant? If not, write down all your excuses, and post them where you can see them every day.
  9. Can you find a picture of Charles de Gaulle or Mae West to put over your telephone?
  10. Imagine you had all the time you needed without feeling pulled by any obligations, your mind free of guilt or inner conflict, totally untroubled. What would you be doing with that time? Do you think you might use it to go after your dreams?

You may not want to share all of your answers to these challenging questions with the rest of us, but I hope you will use a comment to tell us how you feel after answering them? After you share your experience, read the rest and see if you would like to reply to a few.

Please be sure to subscribe to future comments on this exercise or to check back here on Wednesday evening or Thursday morning for new ones.
