Take ten minutes to picture yourself living the Repertoire Life Design Model described on page 194. What would be great about it? What would it be missing for you?
Now do the same, for ten minutes, with one of the careers for Serial Masters:
- Talent Agent
- Career/life coach
- Athletic coach
- Teacher
- Motivational speaker
If you are an unsatisfied Serial Master, create a Backward Planning Flowchart for moving toward one of these careers.
Write in your Daybook how each of these felt and what great ideas came up while you were daydreaming about them. In a new comment on this page, tell us which ones you tried on and what you discovered about them and about yourself. After you share your experience, read the rest of the comments and reply to a few. Who are the Serial Masters in this group?
Please be sure to subscribe to future comments on this exercise or to check back here on Wednesday evening or Thursday morning for new ones.

I could definitely see myself being a speaker, but I tend to speak very harshly and make many jokes and off-hand comments that many would find offensive. So I probably wouldn’t get paid much. On the other hand, I get a perverse sense of pleasure from making people uncomfortable, so I’ve not ruled it out.
Repertoire Life Design might describe my twenty year career. It moved me along an interesting path, enjoyable upon each turn, but painful after each ran its course. It feels a little silly to look back at how much knowledge I obtained beyond what I applied.
Talent agent is an interesting idea. I don’t feel like I have the time or energy for it right now, but it does sound fun.
I’ve thought of coaching others; I don’t know that I’d want to do it for money.
I’ve done a little coaching of athletics – I find it stressful and I don’t seem to have the motivation to put in the time. There’s parts I love. I prefer assistant coach.
I taught a single subject during college. It was meaningful to get a free education and I seemed to be effective.
I’ve fantasized about teaching the full repertoire. I get to do some of that as a parent.
Motivational speaker sounds uncomfortable for my personality. I wouldn’t know where to begin. I have enjoyed a number of times I’ve spoken in front of others. I think about a podcast.
