Review

What you have learned is new. To make it yours, to maintain the perspective you’ve gotten so far, you need to roll it over in your mind a few more times. This review should help you do that:

Instructions

Try to answer the same question for each of the statements below without referring to the book or your notes. As soon as you’ve written your answer, click on the "Show the hidden answer" link for each thought. Let’s go!

The question for each item is the same:
What should you do the next time the following thoughts fill your mind?
(Don’t look at the book or any earlier answers.)

  1. Oh no! Not another ‘great’ idea! Look, there’s another fantastic idea, and another thing I want to learn about! Who am I kidding? I did the same thing last week, twice! I’ll never do anything about my ‘big’ ideas. I have to stop having ideas or I’ll never get anywhere.

  2. I’m a mess. Why can’t I be like other people? Why can’t I make up my mind? Am I really just afraid of hard work? I must be deficient. There’s so much pressure to limit myself to one interest. If only I could find The One Right Thing and stick with it forever!

  3. I’m scared! I’m jittery about time passing! I’m afraid there will never be time to do all the things I long to do. I can’t even figure out what to do first, so I end up doing nothing. I’m afraid I’ll never be able to do what I want to do.

  4. I just can’t make a commitment. I’d feel like I was locked away in a prison and someone threw away the key!

  5. My to do list is so packed I have no time to sleep, much less do something I love!

Week 7: About Cyclical Scanners / Are You a Double Agent?

This week, we will read Chapter Nine, About Cyclical Scanners, just 2 pages. Cyclical Scanners all have ongoing or repeating interests. The rest of the Scanner Types, Sequential Scanners, keep moving on to new and different interests. Along with the introduction to Cyclical Scanners, we have two brand new exercises, not included in the book or published anywhere else. One of them will help you identify which Type of Scanner you most likely are.

After we reflect on Chapter Nine, we will begin our exploration of the different Scanner Types and how to make yours work for you. The first one we’ll look at is the Double Agent in Chapter 10, which has 19 easy-to-read pages.

For each Scanner Type, Barbara offers us some tools, life designs, and careers that are a good fit. But I don’t want you to count on finding the best ones for you in the chapter on your Type. I want you to try them all on for size, because many of them are a very good fit for more than one Type and might work better for you than the ones for your Type.

I also want you to read and try every Type so that you can help your fellow book club members, children, struggling friends, and bosses who are in the wrong job for them.

Here is what we will be doing this week:
