March 20-21, 2021 WriteSpeak Teleworkshop

Welcome to WriteSpeak: Write Your Own Success Story!

QUICK SUMMARY

Here is a quick summary of what you need to know in advance of our workshop by telephone on March 20 and 21, 2021. Click on the links for other time zones if you’re not in the Eastern time zone in the US.

  • No later than 5 pm NY time on March 19, you must complete a pre-workshop assignment. It will take an hour or two. Instructions follow below. Please do it soon, not at the last minute, just in case you need help with it.
  • Calling into the teleworkshop is a normal long distance call to a phone number in the US or your country, or you can use an internet calling option. Instructions for four calling choices are below. Test yours before the call, please.
  • We don’t want you muted except very briefly, so please plan to call from a quiet location and avoid keyboard sounds, running water, young children and dogs.
  • You will need access to the internet during the teleworkshop. However, you will not be on the web and on the phone at the same time.
  • Between 6 pm NY time on March 19 and 11 am NY time on March 20, check this page for the five different phone number/access code combinations you will use during the call. One will be for talking with Patty Newbold and Patrice Jenkins, the other four for small group discussions. There is also a backup number, just in case, for our main number. Print out or write down all six at least an hour before our workshop begins at 1 pm NY time.

PRE-WORKSHOP ASSIGNMENT

You must complete this by 5 pm NY time on March 19. Even one minute later is too late.

Need help? Send an email to webmaster@barbarasher.com. Don’t suffer alone or put this off.

Step 1 – Create a FreeConferenceCall.com account. It’s free. Do not use a different teleconferencing service or an existing FreeConferenceCall account created more than a month ago. If you are not already familiar with FreeConferenceCall, please record a test call with a friend. Complete instructions are in this guide (PDF format). Write down your login information (Email and Password) and your call-in information (Dial-in Number, Host PIN, Access Code, and Online Meeting ID). You will need it after the next step and during our teleworkshop.

Step 2 – Create a WordPress.com blog. It’s also free. Do not use an existing blog or a different blogging service. Complete instructions are in this guide (PDF format). Write down your blog’s web address (yourblogname.home.blog or yourblogname.wordpress.com), your User Name, and your Password. You will need them in a moment and during our teleworkshop.

Step 3 – Share with us the information your small group members and I will need during the teleworkshop. Do this no later than 5 pm NY time on March 19. (We mean it. This is all computer magic. We’ll provide all the help you need if you do it early. If you’re late, there’s nothing we can do to help you. Don’t be late.)

Did you remember to use the Update button to submit your answers? There’s still time if you didn’t. And you’re free to edit and click Update again.

Done? Fantastic! You are ready for a great teleworkshop. And if you’ve never blogged or run a teleconference before, you just finished the hard part. Hurrah for running ahead of your Resistance!

COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS

Use the Leave a Reply form below to ask questions or share information with your fellow teleworkshop students and me. This is a password-protected page. Only members of this teleworkshop can see it.

For more urgent or private questions, please send an email to webmaster@barbarasclub.com. This is the best way to reach us with problems just before or during the teleworkshop. You can also use it to request that we forward your email address to a particular member of the class.

CALLING OPTIONS

Choose one of these four options:

  • A landline phone with unlimited long distance is best.
  • A cell phone with unlimited long distance is second best.
  • Skype is a good choice for those with high speed internet connections. (Google Voice is not.) Download Skype from https://skype.com. The download is free. Be sure to purchase enough Skype Credit for the full 6 hours and a little extra. You will need a headset with a speaker and microphone for this option.
  • The FreeConferenceCall app (on their website or downloaded to your phone). You’ll need the Online Meeting ID for each call instead of the phone number to use computer audio.

Please test your connection in advance. You can call into our main number at any time. Once you are connected, unless someone else is testing at the same time, you will be put on hold and abused with dreadful music. Once you hear the music, you can hang up.

During the teleworkshop, if you get disconnected or connected to some lonely or raucously noisy dead end of the telephone universe, hang up and call back in right away. Be calm and persistent. Patience is of no use here.

CALL-IN DETAILS

Our teleworkshop takes place by telephone in two sessions on Saturday, March 20, and Sunday, March 21, 2021. The first runs from noon to 3:15 pm EDT (or later) on Saturday, and the second from noon to 2:45 pm EDT on Sunday. Click on the links to see when that is in your location.

How to call in to each of our calls:

Best option is by telephone. This includes land line, cell phone, or Skype. Dial the Phone Number. When asked, dial the Access Code, followed by #. If you are the call’s Host (as indicated by an asterisk by your name), also dial * when asked, then your PIN, followed by #. If you live outside the US and Canada, click on the Meeting ID link to view the list of International Dial-in Numbers for this call.

Second best is through the call’s online Wall webpage. Click on the call’s Meeting ID link. If you are the call’s Host (as indicated by an asterisk by your name), click on “Click here to log in” below the green button, then on Online Meetings in the menu, then on Web Controls. If you are not the host, click on the green Join Online Meeting button.

You can also call with the FreeConferenceCall app. If you are the call’s Host (as indicated by an asterisk by your name), click on the New Meeting link, then on the orange Host Meeting button, then on the blue Call in Using WiFi or Data button. If not, click on the blue Join Meeting button. Type in the Meeting ID and click on the orange Join button.

  1. My (Slightly Tardy) Gold Nuggets
    – “If you withhold your talents and gifts from the world, it’s a SIN. It’s like letting people starve because you think you’re not a good enough cook.”
    – “Important things are never left to willpower or self-discipline or character.”
    – “We do things that raise anxiety and we do things that lower anxiety.”
    – Whenever “it” (orphan’s issue/pain) comes up again, we find more and more ways to “solve” it. Welcome it.
    – The same fuel (it) that fuels the vehicle also fuels resistance.
    – What I want/need to say is really what I need (my orphan needs) to hear.
    – “A leader is someone who steps up when no one else does.”
    – From my fabulous gossips: I am tough but not hardened, strong but also flexible.
    – “[My message] may be awkward, but it’s sincere.”

    And perhaps most of all:
    – This is an inspiring and supportive group of people and I am so very grateful to share this journey with you! Thank you Patty & Patrice for your solid, determined, encouraging, and compassionate guidance. xo

  2. GOLD NUGGETS:
    1) I found the orphan and the superhero exercise extremely powerful, as I really felt that I tapped into a deep pool of strong emotion that I hadn’t been aware was lying under the surface. And although I love to read myself and have been inspired and helped by the words of so many other authors myself, I had also never really made the connection that my interest in becoming a writer could be a chance to be a superhero for someone else myself.
    2) Loved the concept of “not going all Protestant” on people. Growing up and being socialized in one pole of the Earth and then going through the socialization process again as an adult at the opposite pole has really made me aware of 1) how differently different cultures can approach the same situations and 2) how often morality and belief colour what it actually just basic polarity and neutral contrast. I really love Barbara’s more wholehearted, nurturant mother approach and the way it contrasts with the WASP Strict Father approach that makes so many people miserable and falsely leads them into thinking there is something wrong with them if they don’t fit the narrow mould of many widespread monotheistic and patriachal religions
    3) I feel excited and inspired by the fact that Barbara’s writing method that we are going to learn about is so different from conventional wisdom, since conventional wisdom has never worked for me so far, and I do tend to feel blocked as soon as I try to consciously sit down and write, whereas I am seldom lost for words when talking with others

    • Thank you for these, Simone. And it sure sounds like you’ll make great use of FAQs and Time Code Transcriptions and Coding and Barbara’s Topic Chart Notebook to get a book (and lots more) out to your orphans.
