Hanging Out

Hanging Out Registration Re-Opens in April 2024

Hanging Out will be the jewel in the crown of Barbara’s Club. To be honest, I think it’s going to be the jewel in the crown of my lifetime’s work. That’s what it feels like. —Barbara Sher, 2012

Barbara called this members-only program Hanging Out, because she wanted it to be like those wonderful moments just hanging out together at her retreats and weekend workshops. Patty Newbold will be your guide now that Barbara is no longer with us.

Barbara put together her most beloved ideas and stories and wrote her best stuff ever for Hanging Out. This was bigger than writing another book. It was a huge job, but every minute was a labor of love for her. And with this program she gives you videos from her retreats and workshops, loads of audio, new interactive stuff and other amazing things we can’t describe here or we’ll go on forever. All this in addition to the exercises that made a big difference to you in the past.

After almost a year HO is still my favourite thing on the internet and in my inbox. So many things I could just read over and over and find something each time. The world didn’t change but I’m different in it. -JD

I’m excited about this exercise. I’ve printed it out to work on over the weekend. Barbara, I look forward to working it through and circling back. You’re a gemstone! -A Hanging Out member in Week 38

Once you’re a member, the rest will be easy. Every week, three times a week, via email, I’ll send you some very special things to read, watch and do. They’re not what you expect, I’m pretty sure of that. As much as you may like my books, what you’re going to find in Hanging Out is very new and very different. You’ll want to make comments, compare notes and talk to the other members of Hanging Out, and that’s exactly what happens here. It changes the whole experience into something entirely new, something most of us are missing and need as much as vitamins and sunshine. The effect on most members has been profound.

You can’t get Hanging Out all at once like a book that ends up on that pile of books you plan to read, and you can’t stick it back on your bookshelf and forget what your life is supposed to be. Barbara learned too much about what’s important for us humans to take that kind of chance.

You’ll receive emails from her every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for a year, announcing the day’s video, audio message, Identity Exercise, Reality Series success story or Brain Candy she prepared for you. Barbara’s Director of Sher Success Teams and WriteSpeak Coach, Patty Newbold, will be reading and responding to your online comments. You’ll also be able to read Barbara’s replies to comments from our first eight years of Hanging Out.

Hanging out has really developed clarity in my life. One thing that I love about you Barbara is that you never tell anyone to just try harder and you don’t shame in any way. You support and encourage which is so very rare. You make sense of the non-sense. This group has provided something wonderful for me. Even the subtle messages are always very powerful. —Michelle

So what is it?

It’s easier to say what it’s not. Hanging Out is not a how-to course or a motivation program. I sometimes think it’s designed for people who have worked too hard and forgot what it’s like to wake up in a goal-free world full of fresh, stimulating ideas, fun and camaraderie.

I’ll always have courses for you on Barbara’s Club so you can find your dreams and achieve your goals, but Hanging Out is not about goal achievement. Instead, it’s more like what one member called “a profound and delicious form of Identity Rehab.”

I absolutely love the idea of Barbara’s Club being integrated into the everyday world—nothing to leave behind—and a consistent source of inspiration. Thank you! —Victoria, by email

If you join us here, Barbara’s emails and online messages will be popping into your life briefly, happily and relentlessly, over and over, waking up your senses, making you laugh and go exploring and, most important of all, helping you remember who you are and how good life is supposed to be.

You’ll receive emails from Barbara every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for a year, announcing the day’s video, audio message, Identity Exercise, Reality Series success story or Brain Candy she prepared for you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for creating Hanging Out with Barbara. There have been so many “favorite” posts. One that stands out is your description of how you decorated your apartment with all the glorious references to color. I wanted to sink into one of your armchairs and absorb it all. Finding our originality. Yes. Discovering ways to express it. Yes. Realizing that time is short and excuses long. Yes. Boxing up all our should, would and could and relaxing into today, into now, into this moment. Yes. Finding that joy is the reward for allowing oneself to just be who you are. Yes. So many wonderful lessons I have learned, relearned, and unlearned this year…What I have learned this year has changed my life. For that I am eternally grateful. – A Hanging Out Member at the end of the year

  1. I just learned about Barbara Sher through a book that has been part of my morning ritual of inspirational reading since October 2016. “Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy” (Sarah Ban Breathnach). She wrote about Barbara in her September 7 page. After a few hours of research on Sher’s site (and sites relating to her courses), and watching the Ted video (Prague), I ordered her first book (Wishcraft). I admit I’m in the midst of change and identified with everything I’ve read thus far. What I wasn’t expecting came after watching the Ted video. I burst into a flood of tears when I heard the term “isolation”. Although I didn’t realize it, I’ve been preparing me for a flood of newness that will literally drown me (but I’m buoyant!) Last year I began practicing Simple Abundance principles even though I felt so blind to what I want to do. Yet I sense a “knowing” within me. This sounds so esoteric and bewildering. I’ve been in such a drought that learning about Barbara is as refreshing as summer rain. I look forward to registering for hanging out with Barbara January 6, 2918. In gratitude, thank you. Val

  2. OK – I blew it! Any chance I can give you me Credit Card and get into the group that is beginning today. I kept procrastinating.

    • I’m so sorry, Melody. We do our best to give everyone lots of advance notice of our registration periods. Our next one begins January 6, 2018.

  3. Im thinking of joining Hanging Out..but besides 3 x per week barbara email fun reprograming h.w. in Joining the 1 or 2 yr.program to end Isolation and b.as One for support chat on following or finding forgotten dreams. .how or what eve? Do we all Hang Out members meet ? Share and support ea.others dreams? Is it live 1 nite a week online.via v.chat or message boards etc?? Maybe u can steer me to a link that gives me a mental map of Hang Outs., tx . Aphrodite

    • Participating in Hanging Out is a lot like reading Barbara’s newsletter, then this page, then posting your comment was, Aphrodite. In Year One, you receive three emails a week, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Each one takes you to a page like this one that your read. Some include a video, like this one does. Some include an audio. Some are just text. And at the bottom of the page are comments from current and past members. You can reply to them or do what you did here, ask a question of Barbara (or me if it has to do with how the website works) or of your fellow Hanging Outers.

This allows people in every time zone around the world to join us whenever they are available. It’s your choice whether to receive email notices of new comments or not, and you get to make this choice message by message.

In Year Two, we switch to messages from Barbara every Monday and Thursday. Every two months, we all get on the phone with her for 90 minutes. These get-togethers take place at 2 pm NY time (so our European and Middle Eastern members are still awake and no one in North or South America needs to wake up too early. For those on the opposite side of the world from NY, and those who have religious restrictions (we alternate between Saturdays and Sundays), we record them. Even so, we’ve had folks call in during the middle of their nights just to be part of the fun live.

      • Hi..I hope seeing ur answer here from my prev.ques.means I DID join HANGOUTS w.barb.sher +gang..prior to pearly gates shut? I hope one of my multi.personalities…lol..did and forgot to tell me??

  4. Fabulous to be here hanging out with you Barbara and all the other multi-talented irridescent people 🙂 Thank you for opening this opportunity to us. I’m looking forward to a fabulous year of increasing depth and happiness.

  5. G’day Patty/Barbara,

I never received email notifications about the two most recent HO posts for me,

Monday Video: A Good Speaker Cares | Hanging Out
Should You Quit Your Job? | Hanging Out

Wondering if something is bugged with the auto sender?

    • Eugene, they were delivered to your email provider without incident. Please check your spam/junk mail folder for them. Obviously, you already know how to find the messages online, which is great!

      • Thanks Patty

They never go to spam or jumk as I have you whitelisted. 🙂

Did you resend them because they arrived about 7 hours ago as of this post.

    • Unfortunately, yes. But you’ll be glad you did, because when you start then, it will be with lots of other people, Altea, which means some great discussions.

  6. What a privilege it is to Hang Out with Barbara and the community here. Soft and gentle steps forward that can ultimately be so rewarding, while also getting to help others where we can. Sometimes, of course, you’re honoured with a personal comment from Barbara herself, who has taken the time to read your reaction and responds with a further insight tailored to your specific situation. So wonderful to be able to interact with such a wise and helpful person and group…

    • Thank you, Andrea. I love Hanging Out possibly more than anything I’ve ever designed, and the amazing level of the discussions here (which I never knew would happen) is the delight and surprise of the whole thing. Something we all need and don’t get enough of is happening here. So naturally I love it when I see that someone else is enjoying and appreciating the subtle, slow movements we’re all making ‘forward.’ 🙂 I think it might be a combination of safety and interest that’s behind it all.

  7. Hi,
I’m wondering if this will be a bit like trying to get concert tickets – i.e. they sell out in the first hour. If so, could you let me know what time registration opens (with some reference to what timezone thats in) – thank you!

    • Not a bit like that, Mell. Registration will be open for a little more than two weeks. Plenty of time. Be sure your name’s on Barbara’s mailing list.

      • Great – thanks Patty! I get a little confused with all the different pages related to Barbara’s work but I’m pretty sure I’m signed up to her mailing list. Looking forward to it 🙂

  8. Trying to “fit-in” new culture. I’m a New Yorker, now in Louisville, KY. Employers are giving me the feeling that I don’t fit in. I’ve even been told that specifically by one. Reading your book is giving me insight and hooe. Very helpful. Thank you.

    • Not sure what you mean by one-to-one, Joanna. We all hang out here – including me as often as I can get here! – and talk to each other about the messages that come from me into your inbox 3 times a week. The more people leave comments, the better the conversation is. I love these discussions and I think I learn at least as much as I teach. And we get to know people from all over the world who we never would have met without Hanging Out. It’s my favorite place on the Internet (and I’m not alone) 🙂

    • Thanks for asking, Joanna. Hanging Out is all in writing and it’s a large community now, but Barbara’s made a few 30-minute one-on-one phone sessions available in April for coaching on Resistance with those who need some help. They are, of course, more expensive than Hanging Out’s group discussions with her, which are in written form and not scheduled. If you’re interested a one-on-one session with Barbara, please send an email to webmaster@barbarasher.com, and we’ll send you more information.
